DRM Kenwood TS-440 MOD
Date:   8 Nov  2003

I finally decided to modify my TS440.
The standard AM bandwidth is 6 kHz (too narrow). For this reason, I was until now operating using FM mode and FM pickup point.  See description HERE.
Was working quite well but some problems must be :
- FM bandwidth is 12 kHz, this mode must be more sensitive from QRM from adjacent channels. Was badly noted on RTL evening programs.
- There is no ALC.  Level on mixer must be adjusted when you change band. I actually modified the RF gain on the TS440. After you choose a RF level, if QSB causes the signal to increase, you may exceed maximum value and get broken signal. If QSL causes the signal to decrease too much, same will happen. So your RF gain must be just set in the middle . But if QSB is too strong, you are obliged to adjust level during the program.

I ordered an IF filter from my local radio shop. He actually had one on hands.

The replaced filter is CF 2   (well that's the one he gave me...).

The existing one was marked 55 I

The new one is marked 55 E   (See what it looks like on this photo)

Instructions:
Open the topside of your TS440
Remove the 7 screws holding the IF unit.
Lift the unit card and locate the filter
On this photo, you will see it, above the blue 455khz filter (CF1)
Move the wires that run around the filter, so that they don' disturb you
Unsolder the 3 pins of existing filter
Replace the filter
Solder the new one

Selected pickup point : Upper side of D15  (Cathode) which is vertical
and thus easier to access.

This page is being uploaded BEFORE I can do some tests (nothing on air at this hour). please look at  my subsequent reception reports before concluding anything....

The first test was done on RTL 6095, Nov 9. See HERE.
